Buying a new house, previous owner did not put down landscape tarp under rock, should i take the time?

We are buying a new home in phoenix Arizona. The previous owners put in a rock yard but did not install that cloth or plastic landscape tarps to keep weeds and grass from growing. Should i take the time to move all of the rocks and put it down or should I just leave it and try to keep up with weed killer?
I am sure that there is no barrier

Are you sure the weeds are not growing on top of the barrier. The barrier stops seeds under the barrier from growing up, it does not stop seeds on top of the barrier from sprouting and growing. If you have had sand blow onto the barrier, seeds came with the sand and that is what you are seeing grow there.

You will only need to spray a couple of times per year. Cheaper and a lot less work than removing the stones and putting down a barrier and then putting the stones back.

Visit Golden Valley Hotel 1

Traveling around San Francisco, which is the best and cheapest way? CAR or BUSES?

My friend and I will arrive at SF international airport. We’ll be living at ASTORIA HOTEL for 2 night 2days for we leaving/depart early on Sunday morning. So I’m planning to visit:

1. Golden Gate
2. Alcatraz Island
3. China Town
4. Nice & clean Shopping District? Recommendation?
5. Is Zig-Zag street somewhere near our hotel?

and if there is enough time & money, we would love to travel to Sonoma Valley!!

So my question is since we don’t know our way around SF would it be time consuming to travel by BUSES?
We don’t know where to get those bus pass either!

OR would it be cheaper to travel by rented CAR? like $12 a day. However, parking ticket would be greater?
But if we have a car we can/maybe drive ourself to Sonoma Valley in time?

Suggestion? please Thank you so much

It appears as though you might be trying to pack too much into your short two-day trip, and if it were me, I would save the Sonoma portion for when you have at least one more day (it is a full day adventure). However, if you find that you have the time to go to Sonoma Valley, I recommend that you just rent a car for that one day.

While you’re in the City of San Francisco, if you rent a car, then you’ll probably spend more time on finding parking than you would getting to where you’re going, and you’ll probably spend more money on gas and parking than you would using MUNI. If you rent a car, you’ll also miss many opportunities to see, meet and interact with some fantastic and colorful characters found here. For newcomers, these experiences are not to be missed!

MY SUGGESTIONS:
You may purchase either a 3-Day Unlimited MUNI Visitor Passport, which gives you unlimited transport on all MUNI busses, light rail, subway and cable cars within the city for only $18 (the 1-Day Visitor Passport is $11) at any of the vendor locations listed here: http://www.sfmta.com/cms/asystem/fareprimaries.php?prod=3-Day
Passports may be purchased in advance and for more details, routes and information call (415) 673-6864 or visit http://www.sfmuni.com

MUNI is the best means of transport to the following:
* Golden Gate Bridge: 28 or 29 bus
* Fisherman’s Wharf: 15, 30, F-line or 10 bus
* Chinatown: 30, 45, 15, 1 California, 12 Pacific or Cable Cars
* Union Square: 2, 3, 4, 30, 45, 38 Geary, Cable Cars, or any streetcar (F-Line)
* Haight Ashbury: 6, 7, 33, 37, 43, or 71 bus
* Cliff House/Seal Rocks: 18 bus or 38 Geary
* Golden Gate Park: 71, or 5 Fulton, 21 Hayes, 33 Stanyan, 7 Haight, N Judah, or 44 O’ Shaughnessey
* Moscone Convention Center: 15, 30, 45, 14 Mission, or 12 Folsom

Hotel Astoria is near the intersections of Bush St. & Grant St., and the “Zig Zag” street is actually Lombard St., between Hyde St. and Leavenworth St., which is about 1.5 miles from the hotel. It is a long walk, mostly uphill, so take MUNI using the Trip Planner on http://transit.511.org/tripplanner. Here’s a link to the route for your trip directly from the hotel to the intersection of Lombard and Leavenworth Streets: http://transit.511.org/tripplanner/itinresults.aspx?prfa=&prta=&fs=510+Bush+St.&fc=San+Francisco&fx=0&fy=0&tx=0&ty=0&ts=Leavenworth+St.+%26+Lombard+St.&tc=San+Francisco&td=0&tm=I&t1=09%3a00&am1=AM&op=F&of=R&ow=30&rt1=&rt2=&rt3=SF

You may use the same Trip Planner for all of your destinations.

If you want to go to Alcatraz, the Blue & Gold Fleet price for their best tour is $25 for each adult. Instead, you should consider adding the $4 Blue & Gold Escape from the Rock option to the 7 Day CityPass for a total of $58 ($54 without Alcatraz), which includes an unlimited 7 Day MUNI Visitor Passport (same as above). Even though you won’t use all seven days, this is the least expensive option and it includes many other sites and extras.

If you’re going to Alcatraz, DO NOT BUY CITYPASS IN ADVANCE!
Blue & Gold Fleet will only sell their tours at the $4 add-on price when you purchase the CityPass at the Blue & Gold Fleet Box Office, located at Pier 39.

The “F Market & Wharves” trolley runs along Market St. Downtown San Francisco, along The Embarcadero and stops directly in front of PIER 39. For more information regarding San Francisco Municipal System, please visit website www.sfmuni.com.

There are several San Francisco Municipal lines that take you to within 2 city blocks from PIER 39: 15 Third Street, 39 Coit, 47 Van Ness, 49 Van Ness-Mission, and 10 Townsend. For more information regarding San Francisco Municipal System, please visit http://www.sfmuni.com.

Coming from outside of San Francisco, ferries are available through Blue & Gold Fleet from Vallejo, Alameda, Oakland, Sausalito and Tiburon on a daily basis. For Blue & Gold Fleet information, see http://www.blueandgoldfleet.com

For basic CityPass information, see http://www.citypass.com/transportation/sanfrancisco.html

Have a fantastic journey!

apanese magnolia is one of the most sought after deciduous flowering plants. The shape of a fully opened Japanese magnolia flower resembles a saucer, hence the name saucer magnolia. Also known by the common names tulip tree, it blooms in shades of white, light pink and dark pink. Not only the blooms are showy and attractive, they are fragrant too. Scroll down, to find more information on Japanese magnolia tree.

Japanese Magnolia Tree Information

Japanese magnolia tree is an ancient species that has originated in China. However, the name is assigned as the first trees imported to America were from Japan. It is suitable for planting in any type of landscape design. During the non-flowering months, the dark green foliage and silver gray bark increase the aesthetic value of the yard. If you have been planning to grow attractive trees in your yard, the following information on Japanese magnolia tree will interest you:

Japanese Magnolia Varieties
As the demand for magnolia is very high, several tulip tree hybrids are being developed with specific characters. Some of the popular varieties include Royal star Japanese magnolia (pure white flower), Ann Japanese magnolia (bright pink blooms), butterfly Japanese magnolia (creamy yellow flower) and Jane Japanese magnolia (red purple petals). Carefully, choose magnolia tree types that suit the climatic conditions in your area.

Japanese Magnolia Propagation
Though seeds are viable, propagation of magnolia tree is commonly done by softwood cuttings, grafting, mound layering and other vegetative methods. As the plant saplings are derived from matured trees, they take less time for flowering, which is not so, in case of normal propagation by seeds. Also, the crown shape, size and tree vigor of magnolias grown from seeds may vary from the mother tree.

Japanese Magnolia Tree Growth Rate
The growth rate of Japanese magnolia is optimal, when planted in favorable conditions. As far as Japanese magnolia tree height is concerned, it is a tree species that grows to about 15-50 feet at maturity. Some gardening enthusiasts train it as a shrub. Hence, according to your landscape plan and garden layout, you can control the height of these beautiful trees.

Japanese Magnolia Tree Planting
Japanese magnolia tree thrives well in USDA zones 5-9. It prefers moist, well-drained soil and areas that receive partial shade to full sun. You can plant it long before the arrival of frost. As the right time arrives, prepare soil according to the horticulturist directions. Make a hole in the soil, slightly larger and deeper than the original container. Transfer the tree in the hole and cover the roots with soil. Press the soil and water deeply.

Japanese Magnolia Tree Care
In the first few days, magnolia tree care involves regular watering. Once established, irrigate only when the top soil dries out. Laying a mulch layer helps in conserving moisture, regulating soil temperature and preventing weed growth. For established magnolia, consider fertilizing in late winter. You can prune the tree in any desirable shape after flowering is over. While pruning, remove old branches, weak twigs and diseased branches by cutting near the main stem.

Japanese Magnolia Diseases
Growing Japanese magnolia tree is not a concern for gardeners. But, the worrying issue is susceptibility of the tree to some diseases and pests. The disease infestation is less, when required growing conditions are maintained properly. Some Japanese magnolia tree diseases are leaf spot, verticillum wilt and sooty mold. And dreadful pests for this tree include Japanese beetle, slugs and leaf miners.

The flowering period of Japanese magnolia start in early spring and continue till summer and fall. Pollination of flower takes place by means of beetles. The blooms are large, scented and long-lasting, thus lending a heady scent in the flower garden for a long period. Check out the Japanese magnolia tree pictures and you will come to know the striking beauty of these deciduous varieties. So, do not delay in visiting your local nursery and select healthy cultivar that grows well in your area.<!– From http://www.buzzle.com/articles/japanese-magnolia-tree.html –> <!– google_ad_section_end –> Known for its large fragrant flowers, the southern magnolia tree (Magnolia grandiflora) is native to the southern states of the United States from Virginia to Florida all the way to Arkansas and Texas. Growing all throughout Mississippi, this tree has been titled as the State tree of Mississippi. This magnificent, broad-leaved evergreen tree with low-branches can attain a height of 60-80 feet and a width of 30-50 feet. This tree features lovely waxy, tropical-looking, 8-inch large leaves, white and fragrant flowers and 3-4 inch long (in spring and summer), cone-shaped fruits. There are several different varieties of the Southern Magnolia tree, with some forming dense pyramidal shapes, while others featuring large gaps between two branches.

Planting Southern Magnolia Tree

Valued for its glorious white flowers, the magnolia tree add a tender and warm touch to the garden, which is why so many people are lured towards this tree. One can plant the tree, however, there are a few points that need to be taken into consideration such as:

Space, Light and Soil
Although southern magnolia tree growth rate is moderate, we need to be prepared to receive a large tree towering up to 80 feet with a width of 30-50 feet. If your garden does not have this much empty space you can consider getting the dwarf southern magnolia tree variety. Moreover, since the tree requires at least 5 hours of exposure to sunlight, thus, ensure that this requirement is compulsorily met. Woodland shade should also be available to prevent rain and wind from damaging the flowers and fruits of this tree. The soil should be well drained with a pH of 4.5 to 6.5.

Digging, Mulching and Positioning
With the help of a shovel dig a ditch that is twice the width and depth of the young magnolia’s root ball. Make sure all stones, weeds and other unwanted materials are removed from the soil. You can do this easily with a garden spade. Next, fill mulch into the dug hole to a height of 4 inches. Hold the root ball on top of the mulch layer and hold it at the center. Fill the region surrounding the root ball with loose soil and pack it well, such that the upper roots of the tree will be at ground level. Tamp around the tree base. The root ball is now positioned properly.

Securing and Watering
There is the danger of snapping and breaking due to strong winds, it is important to secure the sapling with the help of stakes. Stakes hammered into the ground are used to provide support to the young southern magnolia sapling. The sapling is tied to the stake with a strong string and this way the sapling stands firm. Add another 4 inches of mulch and adequately water the newly planting sapling. For the next 3 months the sapling has to be well watered, after which watering is required only during seasons of drought. Add light fertilizer. For the first three growing seasons frequent applications of fertilizers is required.

Pruning
Just planting the tree is not enough, but proper southern magnolia tree care is required for the tree to flourish and grow. Southern magnolia tree pruning needs to be carried out to keep the tree in good health. The tree naturally grows in a pyramidal shape, which is why minimal pruning is required. Spring is the time when new growth is seen on the tree, which is why the best time to prune them is early spring, before the new growth comes about. Some branches need to be removed to attain the desired shape of the tree, however, it is important to not injure the tree or neighboring branches while doing so. Sharp tools need to be used for pruning and extreme care should be taken to avoid damaging or crushing branches.

San Jose Hotels: Proving Progress For a City

San Jose is the third largest city in California. It is located in the Santa Clara Valley at the southern end of the San Francisco Bay area. The “Capital of Silicon Valley” became its nickname. This is when a large development of high-technology computers, microprocessors, and engineering companies settled down in this region. Together with the rise of big companies and schools around the city, many hotels had been built surrounding it in order to accommodate the rising number of tourists.

San Jose is the third largest city in California. It is located in the Santa Clara Valley at the southern end of the San Francisco Bay area. The “Capital of Silicon Valley” became its nickname. This is when a large development of high-technology computers, microprocessors, and engineering companies settled down in this region. With a total of area 178.2 square miles (461.5 km²), it is originally known as El Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe, in honor of Saint Joseph.

Moreover, San Jose experienced earthquake activities along the areas that fall under and near the San Andres Fault. It also has a Mediterranean climate, which is similar to most areas near the bay area. Three sided mountain shelters within the city make it more semi-arid in its environment.

Historically, San Jose was inhibited by groups of Ohlone Native Americans. In 1769, the Europeans began with a series of Franciscan missionaries. In fact, San Jose was founded as the first town in the Spanish colony of Nueva California. This was on November 29Th of the year 1777. It was made possible by a certain Lieutenant José Joaquín Moraga. By the year 1825, San Jose was ruled by Mexicans and became part of the United States. This was after surrendering on stipulated terms in the year 1846. It also supports military installations at Monterey and San Francisco, which were farming communities. Thus, between the 1960s and the 1990s; it became a magnet for suburban neophytes, particularly in new housing developments.

Hence, San Jose served as its first capital when California gained statehood in the year 1850. During 1970s, there was a growth in businesses. Hence, after four decades of fast developments and growth in population, it became the third most populous city in California. San Jose shifted from agriculture to industrial manufacturing as the World War II started. In 1943, IBM established the West Coast headquarters and opened its doors for research and developmental facilities.

Aside from this, a rapid heightening of technological industry was gained by San Jose in the year 1990. By then, Silicon Valley gave more economic and population expansion which led to an increase in housing costs. This is along with the highest rating of 93.6% between the years 1976 up to 2001. San Jose also got the highest median household income as compared to any other city, with over 300,000 residents by year 2000.

The cost of living in San Jose became high when the 25 companies began expanding. This included:
• Flextronics
• Adobe Systems
• Cisco
• Hewlett-Packard
• BEA Systems
• eBay
• IBM
• Lockheed Martin
• Hitachi. U.S. – invested and received about thirty-five percent of all venture capital funds at San Jose. This is along with Silicon Valley companies.

There are several federal and state agencies settling in San Jose, even courthouses. It also houses schools like:
• San José State University Stanford University
• University of California
• Berkeley
• Santa Clara University – specializes on computer and engineering courses.

San Jose also became one of the safest large cities in the United States, along with a population of 989,496 as of January 2008. Furthermore, San Jose continually attracts tourists and more hotels now, offering great accommodations that would fit ones relaxing moments.
