Canon brand lenses vs. other brands?

We are going to buy a Canon xti digital slr and need to figure out the lense problem.
First of all the Canon L series of lenses are way too expensive I don’t think on our budget it is realistic to buy them. Obviously the expensive ones are going to be great. Is it better to stay with the Canon and go with like the EF series or to get a Sigma or Tamron lense? We obviously want the best quality we can get for the most reasonable price. We also don’t want to go totally cheap and get crap pictures. I’m hoping people have some experience with a variety and can help. Is it also better to get one lens with a huge range or to get two seperate lenses?
We will be using this for a variety of projects. Landscapes, portraits and close ups.

My general rule of thumb is to stay with original manufacturer’s equipment. There are some good third party lens makers out there, and Tamron is certainly one of them. But it is my belief that no lens will “fit” a camera better than the lens made by the same company that makes the camera.

That said, you might want to consider looking at the used equipment market for some of your lenses. I know there is the thought that with used equipment that all you’re doing is buying someone elses problems, but that’s not necessarily the case if you work with a reputable dealership.

I bought a Nikon D200 a year ago and got two new lenses with it, a kit zoom lens (18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G) and a regular prime (85mm f/1.8D). I have subsequently pick up a couple more lenses on the used market, a 70-300mm f/4-5.6D and a 60mm f/2.8D Micro. They were both in excellent condition and I got them for about $125 to $150 less than a new lens would have cost.

I know you talking about getting a Canon XTi, but the principle is the same.

They also have a 14 day no questions asked return policy if you’re not happy with the lens, and a 60 warranty on their used equipment. (You might even see if they’ve got any used XTi’s in stock.)

When you’re not trying too hard to be “poetic” there are some memorable lines in this work.
I think you should go back and prune some of the verbiage. The third line, for example, is a real mouthful, unnecessarily wordy.
Why “sequestered” estuary? Just for the assonance? I don’t get that meaning at all.
“Mother Terrestrial” made me think of Mother Teresa. Was that deliberate? If so, why the joke?
“Matronly Orb” is another hollow attempt at the “poetic” style. It really doesn’t convince.
Powerful ending; and when you don’t overegg the pudding, the poem’s really quite impressive.

Landscape retaining wall around a sand mound of an on-site septic system? Possible?

I have a septic sand mound close to the house. I would like to make some more room in the yard by cutting back some of the slope on the mound and installing a landscape retaining wall. I know where the pipes are located along with the sand. Is it possible? Are their photos anywhere on the internet of someone who did this? Thanks.

Caution! Will the retaining wall be permanent? How will the septic repair people access the pipes? If you can answer that, than a regular brick or cement person can make your wall. Try the Yellow Pages and ask the experts.
