what settings should I use on the Nikon D90?
I’ve just upgrded from high-end point and shoot to a D90 last week, and I’m reading the manual as I should … but there’s a slight hang up. I’m an outdoor landscape photographer and my friends are playing a show in a bar Saturday night … and they’re counting on me to take great pictures of them for use on their website.
So given that I’m about to be baptized by fire in 36 hrs, can anyone give me some basic advice on taking action shots in a bar where the musicians will be lit from above by spotlights without needing to use the flash on my camera? I’m new to indoor photography with this lighting and subject motion. Are there specific PASM settings anyone recommends or should I just stick to the auto settings under the no-flash icon???

I’m assuming you have the 18-55mm kit lens?? Unfortunately this lens is that fast (ie doesn’t have a wide max aperture) especially at 55mm (f5.6) Even if its the 18-105mm, it still has a max aperture of f5.6. This may not be wide enough in low light conditions.
If it’s in a bar though you may be able to get close, and that will allow you to use the lens below 55mm focal length, which will give you more leeway with aperture.
You should shoot on aperture priority (A) with aperture set fairly wide. Check what shutter speed you’re getting & if it’s not fast enough to prevent blur, then up the ISO (D90 has pretty good high ISO performance). You may want to have the high ISO NR feature ON. I’d suggest centre weighted metering too.
Forget the flash – the on-board is not that powerful & if you use it in TTL metering mode then it’ll see a load of darkness & blast everything.
