Landscaping On A Steep Slope?
I have a very steep slope (about 80 ft long by 12 ft wide). It is presently grass and I used to put the lawn mower on a rope and lower it to cut the grass. Now that I’m getting older I need to make my yard a lot easier and want to change this area first.
I’m putting a staircase down the center of the area. I need to get rid of the grass on either side but am very worried about erosion. I was thinking about taking out the grass, laying down a strong weed blanket and then covering the blanket with mulch. My hope is that the mulch will hold the ground in place and I can add plants later. Soil isn’t great (sandy) and the last 20 feet of the 80 ft run is under Cedar trees so I don’t even know what to plant. I’m in NorthEastern Ontario so that limits choice as well.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
My suggestion is to not remove the current growth on your steep slope entirely. With your sandy soil, erosion would indeed be a major problem. Instead, cut it one last time, as short as you safely can, then put your weed blanket over that.
On top of the weed blanket, pin landscape timbers to the soil across the slope with spikes (used for railroad ties, etc.) creating terraces. (Drill holes through the timbers for the spikes first.) Without the timbers, the mulch would wash downhill in the first heavy rain.
I’d have to do more research on your climate before I’d have an idea about plants for the cedars. I’m quite a bit south of you, and even here, not a lot grows under cedars
