Landscaping On A Steep Slope?

I have a very steep slope (about 80 ft long by 12 ft wide). It is presently grass and I used to put the lawn mower on a rope and lower it to cut the grass. Now that I’m getting older I need to make my yard a lot easier and want to change this area first.

I’m putting a staircase down the center of the area. I need to get rid of the grass on either side but am very worried about erosion. I was thinking about taking out the grass, laying down a strong weed blanket and then covering the blanket with mulch. My hope is that the mulch will hold the ground in place and I can add plants later. Soil isn’t great (sandy) and the last 20 feet of the 80 ft run is under Cedar trees so I don’t even know what to plant. I’m in NorthEastern Ontario so that limits choice as well.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

My suggestion is to not remove the current growth on your steep slope entirely. With your sandy soil, erosion would indeed be a major problem. Instead, cut it one last time, as short as you safely can, then put your weed blanket over that.

On top of the weed blanket, pin landscape timbers to the soil across the slope with spikes (used for railroad ties, etc.) creating terraces. (Drill holes through the timbers for the spikes first.) Without the timbers, the mulch would wash downhill in the first heavy rain.

I’d have to do more research on your climate before I’d have an idea about plants for the cedars. I’m quite a bit south of you, and even here, not a lot grows under cedars :)

Sprinkler Repair In Orlando FL – How To Choose The Right Contractor

Orlando sprinkler repair contractors are numerous. Due to the amount of St. Augustine turf and mild climate, sprinkler repair in Orlando work abounds, which draws a lot of less than highly qualified people into the sprinkler system business.

So, how do you know who to trust? Well, there are some indicators that you can use.

Completing a lawn sprinkler county license test in Orange, Seminole, Osceola and Lake Counties is not that difficult. Have you taken a drivers license test in Florida? Enough said. Look for contractors who have taken more difficult certification testing. More on this below.

The next qualification to look at is “Will the person who is certified show up to work on my sprinkler system, or will an employee of the certified person show up?” This is where the competition gets very narrow.

The “big full color whole page” companies in the Yellow phone books generally pay their “employee’s” a % commission to look for sprinkler system problems. This changes the employee status to an Ad Hoc “salesman” position because the more the “employee” can get out of you, the fatter their pay check. To my knowledge there is only one Orlando certified sprinkler contractor in the area that meets these requirements.

Here is another great question to ask; “Is your free estimate really free?” The unfortunate answer is, no. The “estimate” is “free” if you sign to do the proposed repairs on the spot. If not, you will be asked for a $75-$85 service call fee. Quite honestly, this is fair. No company can pay for trucks, wages and gas for “free”.

Irrigation repair is different than fence installation. A new fence or roof will cost thousands of dollars.  An Orlando sprinkler repair may only run $95.00. A home repair in the thousands requires an estimate, whereas a repair under $100 hardly covers the overhead. Adding a pool and need a re-design of your sprinkler system? Yes, get an estimate. If you only have a broken sprinkler head, any honest sprinkler contractor in Orlando can give you his price over the phone. If they can’t, keep dialing.

Check your contractor out at these links. They are national organizations that require far more education than Florida counties require. If you can’t find their name, keep dialing.

1. Irrigation Association certification. This is a far more difficult program to complete. Those with I.A. certification have proven their commitment to the physics and science of irrigation design and water savings.

2.  EPA Water Sense Partner certification. This is an even more rigorous program. Those that are accepted are few.

So in review, how do you choose a qualified Orlando sprinkler repair contractor?  Make sure that the person that will be on your property is the contractor, not just an employee. Check for credentials and member associations that go beyond the 4 minimum licensing requirements.

Look for these indicators and you will find the Orlando sprinkler repair company that can meet the challenges of saving water on your sprinkler system.

Green Home Idea: How to convert my house to reclaim Graywater to use for lawn irrigation?

I want to conserve water and use graywater from my sinks and showers and maybe runoff to irrigate my landscape. This would help offset my use of clean water and still allow me to have a nice lawn. Has anyone done this? How to I do this, how expensive is it, and what health hazards/water treatment do I have to worry about?

If you house is set on peer and beam it won’t be too hard to do….if it’s a slab foundation it would cost too much.

You can have a tank put in to collect rain water from gutters…then used later to water your yard during dry spells. Contact one of your local septic system installers for a price.
