How can I water my plants in the winter with temps near freezing?

We just moved into a very adorable house in Portland Oregon with a beautiful landscaped back yard. Most of the plants in the back yard are herbs and greenery. No flowers besides 2 or 3 rose bushes. The only problem is, I am not that great of a gardener! I have noticed that the plants are starting to look a little dull. I would like to water the plants, but the temperatures are around freezing and I dont want to kill them. Should I just leave well enough alone? Any tips will help thanks!

With temps near freezing, they are not NEEDING much water. They are not actively growing, and are dormant. The moisture present in the soil is enough.

You should only need to water during dry period in summer. (and possibly not even then if they are established plants – unless you’re in a serious drought.)

Don’t water anything in the winter. They don’t need it, and the extra water might actually hurt them.

Do You Like Where You Live

If you could live anyplace where would it be?
I currently live in Indiana and have my whole life.
Actually contrary to popular opinion it’s not all cornfields.
But since I’ve lived here so long, when my son graduates, I would like to live in the Pacific North West (Seattle area).
I don’t hate it here. I may even return. I just need a change of scenery.
The climate and landscape (even the rain) seems to fit for me.
What’s the best area in the country to live and any reasons why?

I love where I live. I live in upstate NY, mountains, lakes, rivers and wildlife! In half an hour I can be out enjoying nature which I find very relaxing not to mention absolutely gorgeous!

I am at the moment deliberating laying pave rs, so to make sure that the ground is level, except for a slight incline for drain off, yes you can lay membrane underneath it would suppress the weeds growth.
How about cleaning up the tiles after lifting it may save you money, if they are not grouted in.

What does it cost to landscape my front and back yard?

I want to have a retaining wall made (10ft.x15ft.) (1ft.high) going downhill. An arrangement of plants and flowers to be planted within retaining wall. 30-40 evergreen trees trimmed. A complete clean up of both large front and back yards. Mulch and stones added everywhere. What would the cost to do this be?
What would the labor cost be around?

You will need to have a heavy equipment rental. We just rented ours from http://www.i80equipment.com/ because they were dirt cheap. Excuse the pun. The type of stone you choose makes a big difference. Don’t forget the cost of cement, mulch, loads of dirt, landscaping materials, etc. We spent $5k on ours. That was cheap compared to what we could have done. You have to really save wherever you can. The equipment rentals are the most expensive, so shop around. The site i listed is pretty good. When you buy plants, don’t skimp. When you do, you’ll find you get plants with diseases that spread to the rest of your plants and kill them off. Mites are a major problem with Walmart plants.

What is the best camouflage patterns for hunting in these areas of Texas?

I will be hunting in deep East Texas and a ranch in South Texas that borders Mexico.

What’s the terrain like?

Yes, camo is just camo, but if you wear the wrong pattern, you’ll stick out like a sore thumb.

For example, the camo patterns I use now, I wouldn’t use in North Georgia- the terrain is different.

Is it safe to use landscaping fabric around established trees with an exposed root system?

I have a large maple tree about 30 years old with a partially exposed root system. It is difficult to mow around the roots and I would like to place landscaping fabric around the tree and cover the fabric with pine straw mulch. Then I could set potted plants around it. The root system is so dense that my attempts with planting hostas and caladiums has been futile.

I would think that would be fine, we’ve put it around old trees before without any problems.

I just moved here and would like to start a landscape business but I am unsure what steps to take first. I’m sure I need a business license but don’t know where to go.

I just used my name. In my opinion people are more likely to remember a persons name then some business name even if it is based on what you do.
My business is called Leigh Wall Photography simple and easy to remember and most of the time people remember the Leigh Wall part.
