What plants and trees compliment a Tudor style house?
I have a 30 year old Tudor style house. It’s in a subdivision with homes of other styles, some of them the same style as mine. I want mine to stand out by having landscaping that compliments its style. I know about the famous knot gardens, but I don’t think I have the room and energy to build one. I will be doing most of the work myself. What plants and trees compliment a Tudor style home? I see lots of evergreens in photos, but I also see some that seem to have a cottage look to them. I am in zone 5 (Chicago) and my front yard gets a lot of sun, especially in the afternoon. Thank you!

instead of using a landscaping block around my garden…?
…could I just put some rocks of some kind about 5 or 6 inches thick around the edge? If I were to do this, what type of rock would work best? I was thinking pea gravel but I’m not sure. Thanks!
Hi:
There are many differnt ideas to border your garden area. Natural rocks are very popular today. If you have any size natural rocks around your yard this will do great as a border and also save you some money. There are also a variety of different style stones and irregular rocks at local garden centers or big chain stores.
Another option is to dig a trench two to four inches in depth. This acts as a good water flow around your bed. You can finish off your garden by adding mulch or pine straw and let the mulch or pine straw flow naturally along the trench line. This is a nice professional look.
There are also many plasitc, and wire edging available at local stores. Consider pre – treated landscaping timbers or railroad ties.
If you do the natural or commerical rocks, a nice look is to stagger the rocks the five to six inches thick. They are more secure this way and many of my clients like the look.
Check around stores and garden centers if you don’t have natural rocks around. If you live close to the mountains, take a drive and you will find many rocks available.
I hope this has helped some and if you have any questions, feel free to contact me at my website. Good luck to you.
