What are 10 water conservation tips?

- When washing dishes by hand, don’t let the water run while rinsing. Fill one sink with wash water and the other with rinse water.
- Some refrigerators, air conditioners and ice-makers are cooled with wasted flows of water. Consider upgrading with air-cooled appliances for significant water savings.
- Adjust sprinklers so only your lawn is watered and not the house, sidewalk, or street.
- Run your clothes washer and dishwasher only when they are full. You can save up to 1,000 gallons a month.
- Choose shrubs and groundcovers instead of turf for hard-to-water areas such as steep slopes and isolated strips.
- Install covers on pools and spas and check for leaks around your pumps.
- Use the garbage disposal sparingly. Compost vegetable food waste instead and save gallons every time.
- Plant in the fall when conditions are cooler and rainfall is more plentiful.
- Water your lawn and garden in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler to minimize evaporation.
- Wash your fruits and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running water from the tap.
- Spreading a layer of organic mulch around plants retains moisture and saves water, time and money.
- Use a broom instead of a hose to clean your driveway and sidewalk and save water every time.
- If your shower fills a one-gallon bucket in less than 20 seconds, replace the showerhead with a water-efficient model.
- Collect the water you use for rinsing fruits and vegetables, then reuse it to water houseplants.

Ten Tips For Water Conservation in Your Green Home

Water water everywhere – your home uses hundreds of litres of water a day. Needless to say, water conservation, especially in Australia, is essential to ensure the health of our arid landscape. Even if you live in an eco home, you’d be amazed at just how much water you use in a day.

In a standard household, toilet flushing is the number one user of household water, with 12 litres being drained away every time you flush. Meanwhile, a single 10 minute shower uses 200 litres, a load of washing can use up to 150 litres, a stack of dirty dishes in an average dishwasher uses about 50 litres and your average drinking, cooking and cleaning uses about 10 litres per day!

With all these daily household activities taking their toll on our water use, it’s important we all get water wise in your green home.

Water saving tip # 1 – Tap your water – for less than $5 you can install a low flow tap fitting to cut down on your water consumption. These mesh washers are easy to install and can bring your water consumption down by as much as 50 per cent.

Water saving tip #2 – Grey water – recycle your water when possible. Put a bucket in the shower to collect warm up water to re-use in the garden. For a long term investment, consider installing a grey water system for your home, which can potentially collect over 300 litres of grey water a day to be re-used in the garden or in some instances, for toilet flushing.

Water saving tip # 3 – Be water smart – To be clever about your water use, water your garden in the evening. Water stored in the soil is evaporated throughout the day so to watering in the evening minimises evaporation and allows the water to penetrate the soil and feed your plants.

Water saving tip # 4 – Water Tank – A water tank can be installed for just around $1000 and can collect thousands of litres of water from your roof. Look into government rebates to help bring the cost of installing a water tank down.

Water saving tip # 5 – Fill ‘er up – Do laundry only when you have a full load. The same goes for dishes if you’re using a dishwasher.

Water saving tip # 6 – Power Shower – The best showers are short and sweet. With a AAA rated showerhead and a four minute limit, you can bring your shower water use down to just 36 litres.

Water saving tip # 7 – Clean Dishes – Doing dishes by hand greatly reduces your water use, so save the dish washer for bigger jobs. Alternatively, invest in a newer water efficient dishwasher which uses about the same amount of water washing dishes by hand.

Water saving tip # 8 – Pool Talk – Cover your pool to minimise evaporation and keep its temperature warm enough for a quick winter dip.

Water saving tip # 9- Cut out leaks – A leaking faucet adds up. One drop per second can add up to over 1500 litres of water a year. A steady stream will do away with over 300,000 litres a year. Inspect your taps and cut out those leaks.

Water saving tip # 10 – On the loo – Check to see if your toilet cistern is leaking and invest in a water saving loo. Otherwise, put a brick or a filled water bottle in the cistern to minimise water use.

Swimming Pool Water Conservation in Your New Home

It goes without saying that a steady supply of water is essential for comfortable living. But wastage of water is posing a serious problem to our governments and indeed, our planet and water authorities are setting up many restrictions to try and ensure that we use water the right way. Water is wasted in excess by a vast majority of the population largely due to ignorance of the how important it is to conserve water for a better future, and those who are aware may not know what they can do to contribute to water conservation.

In  new homes. Bathrooms, laundry, swimming pools, spas and gardens are key points where water is used in great quantities. In several places across the world, the water authorities impose restrictions on refilling swimming pools if they hold more than a certain volume of water. Permits are also required to install a swimming pool and some of the requirements include installation of water saving devices. Some water saving devices are relatively inexpensive and quite efficient, for example, changing the old showerhead in your bathrooms to a new water saving one which uses less water but gives you the same pressure. Not only does this conserve water, but money as well, vis-a-vis an economized water bill.

If you have a swimming pool in your new home, there are a number of ways to limit the amount of water that the pool uses. This includes taking appropriate measures to reduce evaporation and splashing, properly maintaining all equipment, and wind protection if you have a spillover design.

The following are some water conservation tips if you have a swimming pool in your new home.

  • Pools and spas have chemicals in them to keep the water clean. Always ensure that the correct chemical balance is maintained. When the chemical balance isn’t right, the water becomes contaminated and may need to be replaced quickly.
  • Top up pools and spas only occasionally and only when necessary. Avoid this or keep it to a minimum during droughts.
  • Do not let your pets into the pool. They will contaminate the water which will require unnecessary cleaning and refilling.
  • Ensure regular maintenance of the pool. Run the filter and check the chemical balance regularly, solicit the help of a pool technician if you are unable to do so yourself. The filter may need to be run up to eight hours every day in summer and for a few hours in winter.
  • When the pool is not being used, put a pool cover on top to stop evaporation. Bubble and thermal evaporation covers are inexpensive but highly effective.
  • Sometimes, pools may run a leak. If you suspect a leak, your pool installation company will advise you on how to check for leaks using a bucket and a marker pen. Check for leaks on a regular basis. A steady leak that is left unchecked will waste the equivalent of an entire pool of water every year.
  • A water audit done by a qualified plumber every year is one of the best things you can do to conserve water. One flow control valve on the main shower and you will end up saving more water than what your pool uses in one year.

The Most Effective Water Conservation Tips

Water conservation is by far the most effective method to help reduce the demand on our water supply and save energy.  This is a huge help to areas that are struggling with water shortages and droughts, such as California.  For the third year in a row, California is faced with little precipitation and critically low reservoirs.  Here are some of the most effective ways you can conserve water in your home and make a difference on your community’s water supply.

A huge unintentional waste of water is when people water part of their grass, and their sidewalk or driveway because of improperly positioned sprinklers.  This can misuse up to five hundred gallons a month.  Also, overwatering is a problem.  If your grass springs back after you step on it, it doesn’t need to be watered.  Using a hose to water your lawn or garden instead of sprinklers is another way to save as much as fifteen hundred gallons a month.  Or if you don’t really like having grass, convert you lawn into plants native to the area so you don’t have to water at all.  If you need to clean your sidewalks or driveway, using a broom to do so can save more than a hundred and fifty gallons each time.  Another hundred and fifty gallons can be saved each time you wash your car if you use a bucket and sponge to do so and only turn on the hose to rinse at the end.

How many people turn on the faucet and wait for the water to warm up?  Filling a bucket with that extra water can be helpful later for watering houseplants or outdoors on your lawn.  As small a step as this may seem to be, it can save up to three hundred gallons a month.  Most people have heard that shortening their showers can save on water, but did you know that even a two minute reduction can save up to seven hundred gallons a month?  Save even more by installing water-conscious shower heads.

Another small change that makes a large difference is fixing any leaks in your plumbing.  You can save up to six hundred gallons a month for each leaky faucet you fix.  Another six hundred gallons can be saved by not using the toilet as an ashtray or wastebasket.  When was the last time you ran just one item in the laundry?  Running full loads only in the dishwasher and washing machine can have a big impact, upwards of eight hundred gallons a month.  It doesn’t take a lot of changes in your lifestyle to make a lot of difference in the amount of water you conserve.  Not only will you be ensuring there is enough water for the whole community, but you will also be lowering your own water and electricity bills at the same time.  Why not conserve water?

9th grade science fair project: How to conserve water and electricity..WILL CHOOSE BEST ANSWER!?

Hi, I am going to 9th grade and am Interested in doing a science fair project on the conservation of water/electricity. What I want to do is take two normal water/electricity bills, and apply daily conservation techniques to each of the categories (i.e. for water reducing shower length) and see how it affects my water/electricity bill (planning to do 5+ conservation techniques for each…that too each technique in a separate month)..I would like to know, is this too basic for a 9th grade honors science project? If so, how can I make this complex (I would really like to make it to state science fair in California)

best answer chosen based off of details and helpful tips…
