I have a tall, spindly cactus that is growing too tall. How can I cut off the top and re-plant it?
I’m not sure what kind of cactus it is, but it looks like a Starfruit with only four points if you look down on the tall, thin stalk. it is about 4inches in diameter. The cactus was given to me by a neighbor who moved cross country. It was in a tiny pot, so I replanted it. It looked good, but it had some spots where pieces had been broken and healed.
I have been feeding it with Miracle-Gro, and it is growing a lot and quickly. Unfortunately, the new growth is more than eight feet off the ground. It is top heavy. How do I cut it for replanting so that the bottom part will continue to grow and the new part will continue it’s uninhibited growth?
ok first put on a good pair of thick gloves and grab the top of the cactus and gently bend it over so that you have ez access to the top.( if you can’t bend it over use a step ladder for assistance. Now you can use a variety of cutting tools such as a pruning saw, or a hand saw, or even a hack saw( make sure that all edged’s of the blades on what ever tool you choose to use are clean as possible). Cut off the desireable length and take it to a table. Now on the end that you cut off, take a razor knife or a sharp knife and scarify the end that was cut. Scarifing means that you take the end of the fresh cut cactus and cut really fine strips of the cactus flesh, for at least 2-3″. You don’t cut off any flesh but you are just slicing the flesh of the cactus to look like a piece of celery strings that tear off as you eat a piece of celery.
What this does is to open up the cells in the cactus flesh so that it helps with the new roots that need to grow out of the cut end, so that the new segment can asorb water. Remember not to over water the new suculent, as it needs to establish roots in order to asorb the water to it’s interior cells.
Good Luck
