How do I landscape my front yard corner lot?

I have a huge front yard. Its divided in half by my drive way. On one side is a large grassy corner with a stop sign and a speed limit sign in the tip of it. Its just too plain but I’m not sure how to landscape it. Please send me any links of pictures or explain your ideas. There are a lot of kids that walk the neighborhood and cut my corner so I can’t do anything like a pond.

Please send me any ideas!

you could make a flower bed in the corner and plant a couple of nice trees in your yard, maybe dogwood or crape myrtle.

I really want to have a career working for Pixar animation. I just started registering for college I need help?

With the classes I am going to take. I am going to a community college first and I need help choosing my classes.

All of the classes they have is:

Art history 001/002
design prin in 2D
design color
design prin in 3D
art appreciation
Survey modern art
intro to drawing
intermed drawing
beginning painting
acrylic & oil paint
figure painting
landscape drawing
watercolor
sculpture human figure
intermediate sculpture
illustration 2
graphic design 2
exhibition design

Should I take them all to have more knowledge with art? I want peoples opinion first before I ask my counselor to see what I could take.

Please I am serious with this question no mean answers or ones that won’t help me. Thanks

Taking all those classes might make you a better artist, but they won’t make you an animator. My suggestion would be to start with the basics in drawing because, after all, that’s how all animated films start.

To be a Pixar animator, you need to learn how to bring characters to life regardless of medium. You can take all the art classes you want, but unless you’re able to show thought and emotion in a character, taking all those classes would be a waste of time.

Pixar relies on a strong demo reel when determining who becomes an animator (if actually animating is what you want to do at Pixar). You’ll need to know basic animation fundamentals and that starts with drawing.

Art Goes to the Dogs.. and Cats

He knew art was going to be his vocation from a young age. “I found I liked art in the 7th grade and have enjoyed and been doing it since then it since then,” said Bailey. After high school, he had a year of design through an architecture program, but nothing through an art department.

As an artist, Bailey went through several transitions, “I guess I went through several phases and tried different techniques and styles while developing art skills, abstract, still life, landscapes primarily.” While he now paints in a Deco style, that ironically was not his influence, “While it doesn’t influence my work nor, I’ve always liked contemporary art. Leonetto Cappiello has been a big influence. I appreciate his straight forward simplicity. His work his fun, the movement is great and I like his contrast of colors.” What did influence his work was his interest in advertising, “One aspect to my background that led me to enjoy advertising art was that prior to focusing on art I was in the advertising industry and did a lot of copy writing. I enjoy coming up with the tag lines on my art and great tag lines are important parts of the final artwork.”

He began painting his, now trademark, dog and cat works while dating his wife. She had a Giant Schnauzer named Genny who he painted for his wife-to-be as a Christmas present. “It was a stylized painting and the first dog I had ever painted. Friends started seeing the painting and wanted their dogs and cats painted and I decided to focus on dogs and cats,” said Bailey. During this time, he owned a gallery in Seattle (by The Market) and a neighboring gallery was planning a coffee themed show and asked if he could do a coffee oriented painting with a dog. That day he received a catalogue from a publisher featuring vintage advertising art. Some of the posters included dogs and other coffee. “I decided the painting I would do for the show would combine the two in a vintage style painting. It sold the day I finished it, I enjoyed the vintage advertising concept and I was off.”

Bailey is now a full-time artist and had been for the past 12 years. While he is an artist first, he also spends a lot of time marketing, “Actually it includes a lot of overtime. In today’s world it takes a lot of work. Marketing can be a full time job,” said Bailey. Ken sells his work in many ways, “One, Directly through my website, two, Wholesale through pet boutiques, gift stores and through online retailers (such as Imagekind.com ), three, Licensing and four, I do a major regional art fair, The Bellevue Art Museum Fair,” said Bailey. For the past ten years, Bailey has licensed some of his images for posters and wall art and recently, he started licensing images for consumer products, shoes, bags, mats, ceramic items and more to come.

In fact, Bailey has several businesses going on simultaneously at kenbailey.com. He will paint your pet for as little as $50.00. He also offers Limit Edition Prints which start at $32.50 and go up to $975.00 while his commissioned work ranges from $2,750.00 to $4,250.00.

Ken Bailey is proof positive that an artist can be financially successful if he or she is willing to put the work in. As for the future, Bailey wants to survive and grow as an artist, “I’m proud that I am doing well. What I feel is my most important accomplishment is when I can emotionally touch someone and a painting or print connects someone to a loved little friend,” says Bailey.

Starting a landscape consulting business: What do homeowers want to know about their landscapes?

I’m a horticulturist with 10 years of experience working on all type of properties ranging from small homes to 1st class museum collections. I want to share my expertise by working with property owners to help upgrade and maintain their landscapes. I currently write a newsletter that covers seasonal maintenance tasks, pest and disease issues, and design ideas.

I’d like to be doing evaluations of existing landscapes, quality checks on new installations (you’d be surprised at how many things can go wrong!), and teach gardening classes.

I don’t want to be acting as a contractor, rather be working as a referer or liaison between my clients and landscapers. I want to be a client’s advocate, not a servicemagic.com paid referal service where landscapers pay for leads or give kickbacks.

I’m open to all any suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

A Northeast Gardener

We had an interior design business in LA for 30 years and offered a similar service. Some of our clients simply couldn’t afford $30,000 to $50,000 for a total room design, so we offered a service where we devised a plan based on their lifestyle, needs and desires. We rendered drawings with sample color themes, fabric choices, wood tones, window and floor treatments that they could bring with them as they purchased items.

Actually, most of the work we did for our clients was in a sense serving as a liason between the trades and the clients. All of our installers, upholsters, painters, electricians, plumbers, etc. had their own businesses and contracted with us independently to complete our designs. On occasion, we had a general contractor, when large scale projects required it, but most of the time we were the project’s front line quality control, made certain everything stayed on schedule and corrected problems that arose as they occurred.

About 80% of our business came from referrals of existing clients who were eager to tell family and friends about the work they had done. I taught classes at our local community college and adult continuing education center which also brought in new clients. We also did some unpaid work, like designing sets for upstart cable TV shows for the end of show credits. Joining professional membership organizations was helpful, too.

I really think there is a need for the service you want to offer. Focus your marketing efforts on areas or neighborhoods where you see bad landscape design. My little canyon would be an excellent example. We have both front and back hillsides with automatic sprinklers, DG, erosion problems and we are all fighting some kind of tree fungus on our liquid ambers. I, myself have re-planted my front hillside 5 times in 8 years, only to suffer massive plant death. There is only one home in our 37 house neighborhood that has successfully developed a landscape design that provides beautiful curb appeal, has the right plant matter for the soil, sun and conditions we have. If you were sending out a newsletter covering the topics you’ve outlined to homeowners in my neighborhood, you would surely garner a substanial client base!
