I’m in a boring midwest suburb full of racist conservatives! Is it fine to want to move?
The weather here sucks! It always gets too cold so I can’t play golf outside every day like I’d do once I move to Phoenix, Las Vegas, or Los Angeles. And culturally, this area is pretty hickish in that you can be openly racist to others and no one will really care.
I want to move. I have the job skills in demand as a computer and video game programmer so I already found work out in the Southwest. Hobby wise I really love golf and try to play it at least twice a week on challenging courses. Crappy weather and flat landscape in the Midwest won’t permit that. Is it reasonable to want to grow disillusioned with and want to leave the town I grew up in?
No, that’s perfectly normal. I have been in situations where I was surrounded by ignorant Conservatives. Those were not fun times…

Tiered landscaping resources or ideas?
our yard slopes downward toward the house (the house is at the bottom of a hill). We have two tiers in the backyard. I need to find something other than ivy for the first tier (4 foot wide, 50 foot long). Grass is not an option, as we can’t get the mower onto it easily.
Drainage is an issue, too, so simple mulch would all wash away.
Suggestions, or places I can look to for ideas??
You didn’t say where you live (climate), what the soil is like, or what the sun exposure is, and all of that will make a difference to what appropriate plant choices would be. My best suggestion would be to talk to someone at a reputable local plant nursery, as they could give you information about plants that are best suited to your local area. The Sunset Garden Book also has good sections on plants for all sorts of particular conditions and settings.
Personally, I like color in my landscaping, so assuming that you have at least 5 hours of sunlight, I would look into the Carpet roses. They come in a pink one-gallon container at the plant nursery. I have deep pink ones and white ones in my yard, and they do a great job of covering the ground while giving some nice color. (No fragrance, but ya can’t have everything!) They come in a number of different colors. They are low maintenance; since mine are accessible, I deadhead & feed them once in awhile, but I have also seen them planted by the roadside here in northern California, where the only care they get is infrequent watering (drip system installed when the roses were planted) but no pruning, feeding or anything else, and they still look pretty darned nice.
Daylilies are another low maintenance option. They prefer direct sun but do all right with part sun. They will spread over time and do a good job holding the soil in place, and the flowers come in a wide range of colors. Most only bloom once during the year, for 6 weeks or so, but some are rebloomers, and if you choose carefully between early, midseason, and late bloomers, you can have color for a long period of time. The foliage is grasslike, and most die down in the winter, although some are evergreen. They all come back nicely the next spring and are hardy in most climates. They don’t need much water once they are established, because they have thick roots that retain water.
Variegated periwinkle is a nice ground cover that does well under a variety of sun conditions. It’s a spreading vine, but unlike the dreaded ivy, it doesn’t climb trees or walls, and it is easy to pull out if it gets somewhere that you don’t want it. I’m not sure about the cold hardiness, but it does fine here, where we get some light frosts but rarely hard freezes. It has green and white leaves that are attractive all year, and as a bonus, it has beautiful blue flowers in the spring.
Something else to consider (again assuming that you have at least some sun) is to plant some hardy bulbs first and then put your groundcover plants on top. Daffodils (spring blooming) and lilies (summer blooming) can be a spectacular display when a large number are in bloom. They can grow through either the periwinkle or the day lilies, although they probably wouldn’t be as good a choice if you did the roses, since the roses will ultimately spread far enough and grow tall enough that the bulbs would have a hard time getting enough light.
