Yucca Root

Yucca Root (also known as manioc or cassava) is a white, starchy tropical vegetable and dietary supplement (including yucca plants, trees, shrubs, and variegated yucca). The yucca plant, itself, is native to Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Yucca Root contains vitamin C and saponins (a distinctive foaming characteristic), making for a better lather when used as a natural (herbal) soap, body wash, and shampoo. Saponins have antifungal, antibacterial, and emollient properties. Yucca species include: Yucca aloifolia (Spanish bayonet), Yucca schidigera (Mojave Yucca, Spanish Dagger), Y. brevifolia (Joshua Tree), Y. filamentosa (Adam’s Needle), and Y. glauca (Soapweed).

Here are some “olde tyme” recipes for a yucca body/hand wash and shampoo:

I. Shampoo

Peel the outer skin from 2 or 3 Yucca root tubers (use more if you want to make a lot).

Chop the white root into very small cubes.

Boil in approx. 1 quart of spring or mineral water until the Yucca root becomes very soft and mushy; simmer the root until it reduces to the consistency you want (thickness or thinness).

Let this concoction cool down to room temperature before using it!

Once cooled, use as a body wash or shampoo.

II. Hand Soap or Wash

As a hand soap or wash, you can shred Yucca leaves or p eel the outer bark of the tuber then rub them together between your palms with water to form lather.

III. Dok Kheti’s Yucca Root Lotion

My Yucca Root Lotion works very well as a skin moisturizer during these dry, cold months of Fall and Winter:

Ingredients:

1 Yucca Root

1 Aloe Vera Leaf (use the inner gel)

1-2 Tsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil

2-3 Cups Spring Water (Distilled Water will do as a substitute)

1/4 Cup Lanolin

5-10 Drops Berberis Extract (from Barberry or Oregon Grape Extract; this is used as a natural antiseptic and preservative)

1 Muslin Straining Cloth

1 Glass Pot

1 Wooden Spoon

1 Sterilized Plastic Holder with Lid

Preparation:

Bring the 2-3 Cups of Spring Water to a boil.

Chop the Yucca Root into quarters, rinse, and then boil until the Yucca Root is white and mushy, stirring periodically.

Let the Yucca Root cool then strain using the Muslin Straining Cloth.

Add the rest of the ingredients in and stir vigorously.

Decant the lotion into the Sterilized Plastic Holder with Lid.

Note: You may add your favorite Essential Oil should you wish your lotion to be scented.

Other Botanical Characteristics and Benefits of Yucca Root:

Alterative: Cleanses, stimulates, and aids in the efficient removal of waste products.

Anti-bacterial: Destroys or stops the growth of bacterial infections.

Anti-inflammatory: Counteracts and diminishes inflammation or its effects and as a possible anti-arthritic pain remedy.

Anti-rheumatic: Prevents and relieves rheumatism.

Astringent: Constricting or binding effect, for example: one that checks hemorrhages or secretions by coagulation of proteins on a soft surface.

Bitter: Stimulates secretion of digestion and encourages appetite.

Blood Purifier: Cleanses the blood as well as enhances it by increasing the nutrient value.

Laxative: Stimulates bowel movements.

Is it Considered The Odd Sport?

Americans have always been enamored with labels when it comes to sports. Nicknames are popular for individual players, groups of players and teams. And until NASCAR crashed the party and Tiger Woods made golf a rising phenomenon, the world of professional sports was usually boiled down to the “Big Four.” Football, Baseball, Basketball and Hockey were the dominant forces when it came to popularity, patronage and participation. However, the evolution of the sports landscape, along with fans’ tastes, has made the label “Big Four” irrelevant. Not only is the number no longer important, but membership in the club has changed as well. And it seems, in recent years, that the odd sport out has become hockey. For hard-core fans this is rather bewildering. No sport demands more from its players and rewards its fans more than hockey. Very few patrons, who have ever watched a game in person, are left disappointed. However, therein lies the rub. The biggest indictment of the game by the casual fan is that it suffers from a lack of translation to the modern day sports lifeline of television. Complaints about lack of rules clarification and an inability to see the puck have led to a dearth of mainstream TV viewing opportunities. But, anyone worried about hockey’s demise because of this factor need only turn to the grass roots fervor of the sport for encouragement. At local rinks all over the nation, programs for kids, adults and women are filling the ice with potential top-level college and pro talent of the future along with a zealous fan base in the present. Nowhere is this more evident than in the unlikely city of Orlando, Florida. Local players and referees have a choice of three facilities in the metro vicinity to get involved in the game. At the city’s most popular complex, two sheets of ice are in service year round. Players of all skill levels compete in house leagues and travel teams, often emerging from frigid indoor temperatures into the intense Florida summer heat. While it may make for an interesting image, it’s just one example of the surprising dichotomy of hockey in the tropics. At these levels of the game, girls play on boys teams to gain the experience of going against superior talent, often times surpassing the abilities of their male counterparts. The same is also true for older players mixing it up with the young guns. Even though a hierarchy of leagues exists to encourage equitable competition, many choose to measure themselves against higher caliber players. And lest anyone think this is just a haven for wannabes, consider the case of popular player and local business owner David Goverde. The former NHL prospect and professional minor league goalie chooses to play in two separate leagues in Orlando. At his natural position, he plays against the area’s elite players. And because he loves the game, he also plays as a forward on a lower tier team. Hockey still faces a formidable challenge to remain among the nation’s premiere sports in terms of revenue and public interest. But, as long as the game continues to grow its grass roots following, it has bright possibilities. For more information on hockey, visit http://hockeymicroblog.com and http://hockeymicroblogging.com

Have you heard that keyline landscape design can reverse global warming fast?

Have you heard that keyline landscape design can reverse global warming, improve soil fertility fast, reduce and heal erosion, let run-off water slowly percolate into watertables instead of flooding off to the ocean, and catch water for free gravity fed irrigation(among other things like a logical land layout, fire protection, emphasis on balanced ecology eg. plants, trees, pasture..,.)? Also, it is something anyone could apply/do if they desire, and without needing government interaction or programs..

It’s very cool:

Keyline design is a technique for maximizing beneficial use of water resources of a piece of land, and the Keyline refers to a specific topographic feature linked to water flow. Beyond that however, Keyline can be seen as a collection of design principles, techniques and systems for development of rural and urban landscapes.

Keyline design was developed in Australia by farmer and engineer P. A. Yeomans, and described and explained in his books The Keyline Plan, Water For Every Farm and The Challenge of Landscape.

The basic idea behind Keyline is to examine the topography of the site identifying several features namely ridges and valleys and the natural water courses. In a valley, a point called the Keypoint can be found where the lower and flatter portion of a primary valley suddenly steepens. A .contour line passing through this point is the Keyline. Contour plowing, paralleling both up from the Keyline and down, will tend to drift rainwater away from the valley centre and prevent erosion. The Yeomans technique differs from traditional contour plowing in several important respects and the limitations of the traditional systems was an important motivational factor in the development of the system.

David Holmgren one of the founders of Permaculture, used Yeoman’s Keyline principle extensively in the formulation of Permaculture concepts and the design of sustainable human settlements and organic farms.

Keyline also includes concepts for rapid soil fertility enhancement and these concepts are explored in Priority One by P. A. Yeomans’ son Allan.
